gets Nasty

Due to the
competition between HBC and the North West Company, the Nor'westers
expanded their territory into the west. They established trading
posts in the Red River Valley and thought of the land and territory
as their own. So when The Red River Settlement was started by Lord
Selkirk of Hudson's Bay Company, the Nor'westers were angry.
They believed the settlement was just a way for Hudson's Bay
Company to gain control of the fur trade in the area.
The Métis
were also angry. They worried that the farmers would drive away
the buffalo, which they needed for food and clothes. They also
thought the settlers would take away their jobs. The tension between
the Nor'westers, the Métis and HBC officials in the Red
River Valley grew.
