Filles du Roi
(the King's Daughters):
Work, Work and More Work

The first jobs to be done in the spring were tilling the fields and planting crops. Farm tools were not yet widely available so farm work was done by hand. Vegetable and herb gardens were also planted. Animals such as pigs, goats and cows had to be fed and taken care of.

In the fall there was even more work to be done. The crops had to be harvested. Seeds had to sorted and saved for the next season. Preserves from the fields, garden and orchard had to be prepared to last the winter.

Farm work was less in the winter, but household chores did not lessen. The wives used the winter to catch up on other work. Sheep fleece and flax were spun on a spinning wheel to make fabric for clothes. Clothes were made at home. Farm tools were repaired.
