Since 1986, 27 issues of the Canadiana.org online journal Facsimile have been published. In the upcoming and final issue, Facsimile #28 (2009), scholars, librarians and Canadiana.org staff once again prove the rich rewards of the Canadiana.org project Early Canadiana Online (ECO) that includes the ongoing Early Canadian Periodicals project.
Canadiana.org with its expanded Digitization, Preservation and Access mandate will continue to rely on its foundation of scholarly input. Building on that 30-year foundation, we will add the dynamics of digitization in Canada with its accompanying issues of content selection criteria, open access, ready accessibility in trusted digital repositories, long-term management and sustainable funding.
To serve the expanded Canadiana.org mandate, there are plans for a new on-line quarterly journal that will replace the Bulletin and Facsimile. The new journal will continue to encourage the use of our on-line product - ECO and our microfiches collections. The journal will also encourage scholarly and research analysis derived from the use of the digital collections produced by Canadiana.org membership.
Equally welcome from the Canadiana.org staff and membership, with their experiences in developing Canadian digital collections, are submissions from systems librarians, programmers, and digital project developers and managers to address the ongoing challenges of developing digital content in Canada.
The end of one successful era marks the beginning of a new challenge.
Past issues of the Bulletin and Facsimile, as well as a selection of research papers about Early Canadiana Online and CIHM microfiches can be found under Archives.
