Lower Canada: An Act to create a fund for defraying the Expense of providing Medical Assistance for Sick Emigrants ... , 25 February 1832

Document Summary:

An act passed by Lower Canada's governors upon Britain's recommendation to place a tax on any vessel coming from the United Kingdom carrying sick or destitute immigrants, so that there be means of taking care of them within the province. The amount of the tax will be five to 10 shillings per person, paid by the vessel's captain to the port's customs officer.

Under this act, two children under the age of 14 or three children under the age of seven will count as one passenger. No child under 12 months shall be counted as a passenger.

No passengers may leave the ship when it docks in the ports of Québec or Montréal until customs officers have examined a list of passengers. Passengers must also spend no less than two days aboard ship upon arrival to the port.

This act is to be enforced until May 1, 1834, and no longer.
