A Guide to Early Canadiana Online
Introduction
Early Canadian Online (ECO) has thousands of early Canadian texts
for you to use in your schoolwork. It's not always easy to find
exactly what you're looking for though, so this page will give you
some hints on how to find the exact text you're looking for.
The ECO search tool allows you to search the full
text of the entire collection, by title,
by subject, by author
- and even by publisher or bibliography. You
can search English or French texts only, or refine your searches
based on past results. Boolean methods are useful for this. Experiment
to find the best method.

Subject Searches
Subject searches are the best first step when trying to
find a document that you need. The terms, though, can be hard to
get exactly right. Below, you will find a list
of topics with useful key words to help you.
- Copy them exactly or the search engine will not recognize them.
- Combine different key words and phrases to get the narrowest
(best) results.
- Try different combinations.
- Check your spelling.
- Try different spellings (e.g., journal and journals).
In addition to the exact words and phrases, there are some general
terms you can use, such as history, women, treaty or treaties,
journals, acts, bills, rules and regulations.
Title Searches
Title searches are a good second option for searching the
ECO database. Keep in mind, though, that titles can be misleading:
documents like treaties do not always use the language that you
would expect. Also, some treaties have French titles; you may need
to try both English and French words for proper titles.

You should only use full text searches as a last resort,
or if you are using an exact phrase. A full text search using
a word or name like Riel will return thousands of results.
Other Kinds of Searches
You can also search by author, publisher and bibliography. This
