Rebellion Losses Bill, 1849


Historical Note

Louis LaFontaine introduced this contentious bill in February 1849 into the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. It sought to compensate those in what had been Lower Canada for damages that resulted from the rebellions.

The first part of this document is a dispatch from the governor general the Right Hon. Earl of Elgin and Kinkardine to Earl Grey on April 30, 1849. Some important sections:

  • Section I: Calls for a "more minute inquiry" into losses after the Lower Canada rebellions of 1837 and 1838.
