Proceedings in the House of Assembly Relative to the Exercise of the Power of Imprisonment by the Executive Council, Lower Canada, May 11th, 1812

Historical Note

Pierre Bédard was a regular contributor to Le Canadien, a newspaper which openly criticized the governor and Legislative and Executive Councils of Lower Canada. In 1810, Sir James Craig had him arrested for sedition. He remained in prison for a year, refusing offers of release on the grounds that he should have a trial. This was denied. Public outrage was so great that he was eventually freed. He later became a judge of the Superior Court.

The proceedings contain objections to the power of the governor and the Executive Council to arrest and detain without trial.
