Final Agreement Act
Document Summary:
The Nisaga'a
nation of the upper Pacific Coast region of British Columbia agrees
to forfeit its land rights to the federal and provincial government
in exchange for money, the ability to self-govern and control
of natural resources. The bill was given royal assent and came
into force in 2000.
Important Articles
Article 3: This document is a treaty and a lands claim agreement
under the meaning of sections 25 and 35 of the Constitution
Act, 1982.
Articles 4 - 6: Makes the treaty legal, valid and binding.
Article 7: Spells out Aboriginal rights.
Article 9: Payment to the Nisaga'a nation is to come from the
consolidated reserve fund used to pay Aboriginals.
