Arctic (Inuvialuit) Claims Settlement Act, 1984
Document Summary:
Inuit peoples
in the northwest Arctic give up land rights in the region to the
federal government, in exchange for the continued right to hunt
and fish and for the right to self-government on the land. They
are to be given the right to self-govern to protect wildlife and
help protect their own interests in the land.
Important Articles:
Article 3.3: All Aboriginal claims, rights, title and interests,
whatever they may be in the northwest Arctic regions of Canada,
are extinguished to the federal government. However, Aboriginals
in the areas will continue to be entitled to all of the rights
and benefits of all other citizens, and those resulting from their
Aboriginal status (and other rights) from time to time.
Article 6: The federal government agrees to pay out funds to
the Inuit for land appropriation.
