| Letter
of Jonathan Belcher to the Lords of Trade 2 July 1762 - Halifax, Nova Scotia (Articles
on the fishing and hunting rights of the "Eastern Tribes" in the colony
of Nova Scotia.) Document Summary:
Belcher writes about the interruption of Aboriginal hunting and fishing rights
in the Thirteen Colonies.
He warns of a similar problem in Nova Scotia between the French Acadians and First
Nations, and advises that such rights not be interrupted so long as the Aboriginals
are at peace with Britain - not until the British monarchy decides otherwise should
these rights be revoked. Belcher says this potential problem between the
Aboriginals and Acadians might be cause for an increased naval and military presence
in the region, and suggests that the Acadians be forcibly removed to prevent further
problems with the Aboriginals. |
