The Selkirk Treaty, 1817

Document Summary:
Chippewa, Cree, Killistine and Saulteaux Aboriginals living along the Red River in current-day Manitoba make a treaty with Thomas Selkirk to give up their rights to a tract of land forever for the purposes of European settlement. In exchange, each Aboriginal nation was to each receive high-quality tobacco as a gift each year. The Métis are not involved in this exchange.
